AMD is officially presented the fastest processor in the Phenom II line, the model Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition. Unlike the previous model 940 BE, 955 is intended for socket AM3 and DDR3 memory, but because integrated DDR2 controller installation is possible also on older AM2 + boards.
Processor has 8 MB cache and TDP of 125 W and works on 3.2 GHz. Of course as previous practice in Black Edition line, this model has an unlocked multiplier, so customers can easily overclock the system, either through the BIOS, either using software such as AMD Overdrive.
AMD said that 955 can be overclocked up to 3.6 GHz, but with more effort it is possible to catch 3.8 and 4.2 GHz with good air conditioning and without oveclocking of memory. Processor is not faster than Intel’s Core i7, but lead with performance in comparison with the Core 2 Quad Q9550 clock 2.83 GHz.
Suggested price is $245. The company sees this chip in the powerful computers based on the Dragon platform, combined with chipset Series 7 and ATI Radeon HD 4890.
